Defensive Driving Computer Based Training Course

The National Safety Council seeks a new computer based training course

The National Safety Council (NSC) serves as the nations leading advocate for safety and health.  They were using a third party vendor to develop and host their defensive driving computer based training (CBT) course.  NSC wanted to be able to have more control over the quality and content of the course and provide a more effective user experience.  Additionally they had a goal of being able to customize their content for different corporate sponsors.

Dunn Solutions Group Delivers the Complete Package

NSC chose to work with Dunn Solutions Group to create a new defensive driving course, based on Dunn’s expertise in application development and first-rate interface design.  In the first phase, Dunn performed requirements gathering and identified NSC’s needs: the system had to register students, collect credit card payments, and track student progress through the course. Through this analysis Dunn determined that it was more economical for NSC to meet its’ goals by purchasing an off-the-shelf learning management system (LMS), as opposed to developing an application from scratch.  The LMS would deliver a robust platform for the course and allow NSC to build dozens of new courses.

In the second phase, Dunn developed a defensive driving CBT course, which integrated Dunn’s original state-of-the-art graphics with NSC’s text and images.  The application was written in Macromedia Flash, which allowed Dunn to provide an engaging interactive user experience and is Shared Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) compliant.

The finished application was built in modules to increase flexibility and allow for rebranding.  To provide consistency in branding and to create a cohesive look and feel, Dunn utilized visual cues from NSC’s informational brochures and video graphics.

Dunn Solutions Group exceeds NSC’s expectations

The final application engages users and is more interactive than NSC expected.  The application illustrates important safety issues, such as mirror alignment and safe passing.  In addition, the application allows for easy re-branding which enables NSC to approach other markets. Finally, the application provides an e-commerce platform, resulting in more customers and higher revenues. According to Barbara Caracci, Director of Program Development for the National Safety Council “Dunn Solutions Group was given a monumental task to accomplish in a short amount of time and they came through.”  NSC continues to enjoy a strong on-going relationship with Dunn Solutions Group, including a recent engagement for the development of an interactive home safety course.
